The Face (1980–2004)

Whilst having a trawl through my Flickr account, I realised that the group I set up yonks ago, The Face (1980–2004) has been a little bit neglected. Unfortunately I no longer have a massive collection of back issues, so would really appreciate any scanular contributions from you folks out there. As far as I'm aware, there's no other collection of covers and spreads like this around, so it'd be good to get as much stuff in there as possible.

Oh, and if you happen to be the person who actually owns the rights to The Face's legacy – how about a book? Or better yet, an iPad app with every single back issue. Trust me, it'll sell like hot cakes. Pretentious, stylish, libellous, amazing hot cakes.

(Photo tweaked from one I found at the rather fabulous London Shop Fronts.)

Love to help with this. I am sure I have some early ones knocking around. I was actually lucky enough to design an issue of the Face back in 1991 (Madonna cover). What an experience. Their design team had walked out on them, and I knew someone on Arena, who suggested I could get the next issue out. It was alarmingly lo-tech even in 1991. Armed with HB pencil, layout pad, scalpel and spraymount, 2 weeks later we had an issue. Right, now where did I put those mags...

@Neil – Neil stories like that make me glad I turned comments back on! Just had a look at that cover – v. nice. Now, wouldn't it be great if your work had some how been immortalised as – oh, I don't know – a tote bag, say?

Ha! That is so funny to see that. I wonder what Stephen Meisel, the photographer, would make of that? Seem to remember protracted telephone calls to him in the States trying to beat him down from his $20,000 fee that he wanted for us to use the whole shoot. Needless to say, we just went for the one shot on the cover. Happily, the cover also lives on in a book called Front Page: Covers of the 20th century. Worth a look for some other great covers.
