Poached eggs, George Hamilton and Roosevelt Island

Just had a lovely weekend of doing pretty much nothing, and it was lovely. On Friday night, we watched The Rock, which is a pretty damn good film by anyone's standards. According to Empire's A-Z of Michael Bay, the script was tweaked by Dick Clement, Ian La Frenais, Jonathan Hensleigh, Quentin Tarantino and Aaron Sorkin. That's quite a pedigree.

On Saturday, the sun had his hat on. A walk around York in the sun is one of the best things you can do in life, but when you cap it off with a Rissoto Lucia and a sit in Museum Gardens with Dr B and the new issue of Port (roughly a thousand times better than the new issue of Esquire), you've got yourself a perfect Saturday.

And then on Sunday we decided to try poaching eggs for the very first time. We couldn't have done this without Google (my usual technique: type the food in question and follow it with "Nigella", "Jamie" and "Delia") and Twitter (bless you, wise Flying Monkeys). Whilst doing it, @mikebreed tweeted this New Yorker cartoon, which is basically a portrait of us in the kitchen. I'm glad to say it went very well, and we managed to get them eggs poached and slapped on some toast with a spot of pesto just in time for a classic Columbo (featuring the ever-bronze George Hamilton on particularly slimy form). Bless you Peter Falk – Sundays were invented for you.

We ended the weekend with a spot of DIY Conversing (very excited about receiving my bespoke Swiss Cheese Cons – I'll get some pics up here as soon as they arrive), ordering tickets for Wilco at The Roundhouse (even more excited about that!), and a watch of Walter Salles' Dark Water. It's a pretty good film, but one that commits the unforgivable crime of wasting Tim Roth. It got me a little bit fascinated with its location: Roosevelt Island. A sliver of land between Manhattan and Queens, barely a block wide, it's a bizarre microcosm of New York – like a Lego model of the city built on a sideboard. Must visit it next time I'm over there.

So yes, for a weekend of doing nothing, I managed to squeeze a heck of a lot out of it.
